True to the collection’s title, each piece exhibits a strong, clearly defined voice, delivered in a range of forms. The stories we tell ourselves are not formed in a vacuum, but they are also not set in stone; these writers illustrate that stories are meant to be interrogated, and truths are meant to be told.
Editorial View Of Cities Of Refuge
The early twentieth century saw an influx of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and Russia, who settled in the East End of London. They spoke Yiddish, were active in the labor movement, identified as working class. The tensions between the two communities are explored in Miri Freud-Kandel’s book on orthodox Jewry in Britain.29 Mirroring the tensions between Ostjuden, Eastern European Jews, and German Jews that existed in Germany, it is not surprising that in the 1930s and 1940s most refugees identified with the middle-class West End Jews and chose to settle in their neighborhoods
